2016 Lambs!

Watch this page for the arrival of 2016 Shetland and Shetland/Icelandic crosses

Here are our 2016 Shetland and Icelandic/Shetland cross lambs.  I will evaluate the lambs for flock retention as they wean, please contact me if interested!

Shetland Ram
Fletcher Shazam (S39990): this year's senior flock sire. He's the fourth generation away from the Dailley flock.  He's with three Shetland ladies, Fletcher Miesha (S36742), Aria (S40125), and Fletcher Elle (S36723).  His fleece is longish and very soft; single coated in the front with a double-coat toward the britch - a fine example of the "primitive" variety small-statured, square, with wide horns.

Elle, fresh from shearing, with her two ewe lambs.

Shetland Ram
Tyrion (S40129): this year's junior sire.  He's been in with Fletcher Pinot Noir (S36732) and the two unregistered Icelandics.  He is of the improved type, single coated, very "curly" wool, lankier in form with a closer set of horns.  Ideally, he'll take over next year as the senior sire, imparting his improved wool on my ewes while their primitive genes should improve the spread of his horns.

Frigg, our senior Icelandic and flock queen, gave us two black ewe lamb crosses this year

Fulla, an Icelandic, with her single cross ram lamb.  He'll be wethered before two long

Pinot Noir with her three ewe lambs... they're camera shy!
A better photo of Pinot Noir's "Rosé" - Probably our most unique lamb pattern this year!

  1. Very nice! Is the ewe lamb, with the unusual markings,a katmoget? She looks like it. Is she an Ag? What's her wool like?

    1. Yes, she'll be a katmoget. Her sire is a dark grey katmoget, but is mismarked on the papers. I'm curious to see If she stays that light. Sire has very curly, tight wool. Dam is maybe somewhat dual coated, but very dense. Rosé is pretty curly. Not as tight as sire though.

The lamb I'm most interested in seeing develop is Aria's ram. She's my young ram's half sister and cousin (some close breeding down that line), and that line has fine horns where the sire is my old Fletcher ram with a big spread.

Aria and Tyrion's (half brother) lineage is originally from Beryl Baker's flock inn Tucson. By the looks of them, she has some very nice animals.

  3. That's a nice looking group of lambs. I will be interested if you decide to sell any of the Shetlands.

    1. I'm planning on selling at least two (maybe three) of the purebred Shetland ewes. The two cross-bred ewes and the ram will be available. Obviously those wouldn't be registerable. You're welcome to come by and see them.

Ellen Baize down in Texas is interested swapping ewe lambs with me at weaning. She may able to bring a lamb up for you as well. Also, Shannon Gilmore in Ardmore has a registered flock. I'm not sure if she bred this season though.

Did you end up bringing in sheep from Texas?

    2. No, I don't have any sheep yet. We are just now completing our fence and I couldn't convince my husband to get any before then. I talked to Laura Gilmore in Ardmore, and she just has one ram for sale this year. Shannon Fletcher near Tulsa said she might have some in the fall- is that where your sheep came from? It looks like she is back on the registry now. So it looks like I'll be able to get some in the next few months. When will you be weaning/deciding which to keep? I am looking for 2-3 ewes, preferably with a calm and friendly personality. I'll contact Ellen Baize next; thanks for the tip.

    4. Yes, my flock came from Shannon - she was a very early Shetland breeder in the US and has excellent stock and it's great to see her back in NASSA. I have a good idea as to which ones I'll keep. Ellen texted me today - as soon as she picks one, I'll know which ones that'll be available. I'll likely keep back four. My flock is not currently as "cuddly" as you see some are, but they respond well to the occasional treat and get used to you quickly

  4. If you don't keep the white ewe from Miesha I would like her.

    1. My daughter's claimed her - I let her pick a lamb as consolation for selling a donkey that she'd tamed. The donkey was nice enough, but attacked the goats.
