Our Sheep

Shazaam -- our first flock sire
We keep a small flock of registered Shetland Sheep (NASSA flock #2465, two Navajo churro and one Icelandic sheep.

Our endeavor with sheep began mostly by my distaste for mowing!  From Summer '12 to Spring '13, we rotated two Holstein steers and they did a great job of keeping the grass down -- but they left behind the weeds (namely giant ragweed).

When the cows headed to the freezer, the keeping of sheep became attractive for their economy and small size (safer around kids than the cattle).  The primitive breeds such as the Icelandic and Shetlands were attractive for their ability to thrive on grass and no supplementary grain.

Overall, their ability to graze an area out is great!  They ate up the giant ragweed, ate back some of the sandburrs, and they spread manure more evenly than cattle.

In the meantime I have learned to shear and dally with processing the wool - mostly so I can become familiar with the quality of the wool for flock management.

We shear around May of every year, and usually have raw wool available through the Summer.  As our flock grows, we will have lambs available for starter flocks and butchering.

If you are interested in  starter flock or wool, please don't hesitate to contact us!.
